John Pearson, Chief Executive of Intelligentsia Worldwide, wowed the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals in Amsterdam, on 5 November, with an engaging, fast paced, 45 minute presentation titled 'Intelligence Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them'.
John used 10 war stories drawn from real life situations in the CI trenches to illustrate his messages.
"I want to alert people to some of the booby traps that litter the field of CI. My approach is to tell a story to illustrate a danger and then to share a tip for avoiding it".
"For example, some intelligence professionals place too much reliance on published information sources. This can cause a business to miss a competitive threat. My story is about an intelligence unit that was blind to a competitor's growing success in a key market. This was because they relied on old and inaccurate published data. My tip - supplement your published sources with primary competitor research."
Delegates rated the talk 'first class'. "The tips were practical", said one delegate, "and the stories were amusing and punchy. They brought home the mess you can get yourself in if you don't follow good practice."
